Description

Jan-Pol Incoming Tour Operator in Krakow presents:

The main city of Lower Silesia in the South West of Poland, Wroclaw was the second most destroyed Polish city during World War II. Nevertheless, the historic buldings that survived together with those that have been reconstructed make the Old Town a place well worth visiting. After the war, Wroclaw re-established its important position as a scientific and academic centre. Wroclaw’s history, due to its location, is closely connected with the rest of Europe, particularly that of the Habsburgs, Prussia and Germany. The unique traits of the city are its canals and tributaries of the River Odra and more than a hundred bridges and for this reason it is often called the Polish Venice. Its unique atmosphere makes it a very popular destination for city breaks and short stays en route to other destinations including Krakow, the Ukraine, Prague, and Berlin.
Tour of Wroclaw
The oldest part of the city is Ostrow Tumski island with its 13th c. Cathedral. A legend says that the island was one of the first fortified settlements in Poland. Across the river stands the Baroque University building whose Aula Leopolidina is a masterpiece of decorative art. The Old Town is an essential part of any tour of Wroclaw. The Old Market Square with its Gothic City Hall form a wonderful heart to the city, and the splendid facades of former burgher houses make the whole area an interesting architectural example and focal point of artistic life. The unique Panorama Raclawicka - the biggest painting in Poland, requires a special building just to house it. Painted by Jan Styka and Wojciech Kossak at the end of the 19th c. it depicts the triumph of General Tadeusz Kosciuszko over the invading Russians in 1794.
Riverside View of Wroclaw
Boat tours on the Odra River offer the opportunity to admire the beauty of Wroclaw from the riverside. The cruise takes approximately an hour depending on water level and takes in the National Museum, Ostrow Tumski Island and the Brick Bastion.
