Day 1: Arrival to Warsaw
Arrival to Polish capital Warsaw. Introductory meeting with tour leader. Dinner at the hotel. Overnight stay in Warsaw.
Day 2: Warsaw and surroundings
We begin with sightseeing of Warsaw. Although Warsaw's Old Market Square was entirely destroyed, it was rebuilt according to the original plans and the Old Town has retained much of its charm. Today, crowds of visitors flock to its cafes, restaurants and museums. Warsaw is not only the political, administrative, scientific and cultural centre of the country, it has also become the business centre for commercial activities between west and east. In 1996, Warsaw celebrated its 400th anniversary as the capital of Poland. Warsaw's historic centre is a major UNESCO listed World Heritage attraction. We shall take part in a motorized sightseeing of the city and in the afternoon we will take our first bicycle ride towards Wilanow, a former country residence of Polish king Jan Sobieski surrounded by an atmospheric garden. An evening meal is planned in one of typical Polish restaurants in the Old Town area. Overnight stay in Warsaw. (Approximately 30 km cycling).
Day 3: Pulawy and renaissance town Kazimierz
In the morning we will be transferred by bus to Deblin, south of Warsaw where the actual bicycle tour will start. Deblin itself is home to a renown Military Aviation School. Other than that, of the military traditions in Deblin remind several fortifications from the 19th century. Our first leg will follow the wide Vistula Valley heading south towards Pulawy and further to Kazimierz Dolny, one of the most beautifully situated little towns in Poland. It enjoyed its greatest prosperity in the 16th century and the first half of the 17th century, due to the trade in grain conducted along the Vistula river. It became an economic backwater after that trade declined, and this freeze in economic development enabled the town to preserve its Renaissance urban plan and appearance. An optional cruise along the Vistula River is available this afternoon. Dinner at the hotel. Overnight stay in Kazimierz Dolny. (Approximately 45 km cycling)
Day 4: Sandomierz
A morning bus transfer will take us in the area of a landscape park located on the right bank of the Vistula, from where we will have an extensive view of the valley. Pedaling through woods we will reach another medieval town along the Vistula river – Sandomierz. After arrival we shall visit the historic centre and later participate in a walk along an original underground tunnel trail under the market square. Sandomierz is perfect town for an overnight stay with several good restaurants inside historic buildings to choose for an evening meal. Overnight stay in Sandomierz. (Approximately 70 km cycling)
Day 5: Baranow Palace
Today we shall follow Vistula further south with views of castles ruined during Swedish invasion in 17th century. Our destination today is Baranow Sandomierski dominated by an aristocrat’s palace. We will stay over the night within the palace complex. A dinner in true palace interiors will await us tonight. The menu consists of typical Polish cuisine developed over the centuries for the needs of the aristocrat families. Overnight stay in Baranow Sandomierski. (Approximately 52 km cycling)
Day 6: Puszcza Niepolomicka Forest
With a morning transfer we reach a small town Wislica with its history stretching back to 11th century. We shall visit the interiors of one of the oldest churches in Poland. Afterwards we will head south along the Vistula river passing primeval forest called Puszcza Niepolomicka. We will end today’s leg near the Royal Castle with rich art collection. Dinner at the hotel. Overnight stay in Niepolomice. (Approximately 75 km cycling)
Day 7: Wieliczka Salt Mine and Krakow
We will cycle today towards Krakow with a stop in Wieliczka Salt Mine, an object listed by UNESCO as world heritage, with miles of halls and tunnels carved in solid salt. There is even a football field arranged in one of the mine interiors. After visiting the mine with a local guide we will cycle the final kilometers towards Krakow.
Krakow, with a population of nearly one million inhabitants, is one of the most frequently visited cities in Poland. It is an important centre of science with its renowned Jagiellonian University (est. 1364) - one of the oldest schools in Europe. The old city centre of Krakow has been also enlisted as one of the UNESCO World Heritage sites. And its exceptional atmosphere and flair attract thousands of tourists every year. Day 8: Krakow
We begin today with a guided tour of the city of Krakow, where bicycles are the best mean of transport. En route we will stop at the Main Market Square, the oldest University building Collegium Maius, the Jewish Quarter Kazimierz and several other sites. After a half-day guided tour you will have a free afternoon for individual sightseeing. Overnight stay in Krakow. (Approximately 15 km cycling)
Day 9: Krakow’s surroundings
Our last cycling leg will lead us to the Ojcowski National Park located in the north-west vicinity of the city. It is a popular destination for cyclists and walkers. The Park is full of valleys, ravines and caves carved in limestone rock. During your stay you will have a chance to visit Ciemna Cave where traces of Neolithic life have been found, and the castle of Ojcow, which is a part of ancient Eagles’ Nests Trail. After our return to the hotel in Krakow we will walk to a Galician Jewish style restaurant for a farewell dinner with a concert of Klezmer music, a fine end to our tour. Overnight stay in Krakow . Day 10: Return journey
Return home or individual stay extension.
Grade: The route follows Vistula river during most the trip and is therefore flat. Occasional uphill sections do not exceed 50 meters in altitude difference. The group will follow quiet, well chosen country and forest roads.
